Talking to Monsieur Tout-le-Monde

I think privacy professionals need to get out more. I mean, talk to real people, average consumers, normal Internet users. Most of us privacy officers spend most of our time talking to each other, or to privacy regulators, or to privay advocates, or to company privacy department colleagues. But, at the end of the day, the people whose privacy we're trying to protect are not the specialists. So, I've made a personal resolution to try to spend less time engaging in abstruse academic privacy debates, and more time giving simple privacy advice, for general audiences, with practical tips. Anyway, I'm trying. Here's a radio interview for France Info, which, I'm told, reaches 4 or 5 million people. In French:

Dear Peter,

I've seen many of your video's on the Google private channel and appreciate the effort Google is putting in trying to lift privacy legislation to the next level.

And as you want to dedicate more time to educate mere mortals on the issue I wonder what you think of developments in Sweden where they have adopted legislation that allows eavesdropping without a cour order on cross border emails? you can read an article about it at:

Thanks,

Your promise to get to know the average Joe, so to speak, who's privacy you try to protect is admirable. But, does the average Joe even understand the issues involved? I mean, I'm a professional geek and I feel like there are tons and tons of digital privacy issues I don't understand, so I can't imagine the people who come to me for help really getting it sometimes.
